Somali enterprise leaders taking part in a facilitated SSDI workshop
About SSDI

A Somali institution built for enterprise progress.

SSDI develops the knowledge, leadership, systems, and connections that help Somali entrepreneurs and institutions grow with confidence.

Our story

From a proven academy to a lasting institute.

SSDI began as BUDI Academy, the training arm of Bulaal Development Initiative (BUDI), a Somali-led social enterprise founded in 2018.

The academy built a practical delivery record with women, youth, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. SSDI now carries that experience forward as an independent institute with its own curriculum, facilitators, standards, and institutional ambition.

We are building more than individual courses. We are building a center of excellence that can retain local knowledge, strengthen enterprise support systems, and serve Somalia for the long term.

Our mission

Capability that turns ambition into sustainable enterprise.

To deliver high-quality, locally grounded learning and advisory support that strengthens the operational, financial, technical, and leadership capacity of Somali SMEs and the institutions that serve them.

Our vision

A competitive private sector that creates opportunity across Somalia.

A Somalia where every SME—regardless of the founder's gender, region, or starting capital—can grow, formalize, and sustain a competitive business.

What guides us

Five commitments behind every program.

They shape what we teach, how we partner, and how we measure whether our work made a difference.

01

Local relevance

Curriculum built for the Somali business context — not imported wholesale.

02

Integration

Hard skills and soft skills taught together, not as separate tracks.

03

Practical design

Content shaped by direct delivery experience and participant feedback.

04

Inclusion

A deliberate focus on women- and youth-led enterprises.

05

Accountability

Transparent reporting and measurable outcomes for every program.

An ecosystem approach

Training is stronger when it connects to finance and institutions.

Our BUDI roots give SSDI a practical foundation. Our relationship with Bulaal Microfinance helps create a pathway from newly built capability to appropriate capital.
