SSDI — Somali SME Development Institute
Our story

Built on a decade of real delivery.

SSDI began as BUDI Academy, the training arm of Bulaal Development Initiative (BUDI), a Somali-led social enterprise founded in 2018. It has since become an independent, standalone institute — carrying forward a delivery record of over 1,000 women and youth trained, 62 leadership and negotiation workshops, and seven regional and national business forums.

Today SSDI holds its own curriculum, facilitators, and standards — an institution built to last, not a one-off project.

Our mission

To deliver high-quality, locally grounded training that strengthens the operational, financial, technical, and leadership capacity of Somali SMEs and the institutions that serve them.

Our vision

A Somalia where every SME — regardless of the founder's gender, region, or starting capital — can grow, formalize, and sustain a competitive business.

What we believe

Hard skills + soft skills, together.

SME failure is rarely one missing skill — it's weak execution and weak leadership compounding. So every cohort blends both, guided by five commitments.

01

Local relevance

Curriculum built for the Somali business context — not imported wholesale.

02

Integration

Hard skills and soft skills taught together, not as separate tracks.

03

Practical design

Content shaped by direct delivery experience and participant feedback.

04

Inclusion

A deliberate focus on women- and youth-led enterprises.

05

Accountability

Transparent reporting and measurable outcomes for every program.
